A diaphragm pump operates using a flexible diaphragm that moves back and forth to create suction and discharge cycles, allowing fluid to be pulled in and pushed out of the pump chamber without direct contact with moving mechanical parts.
Here’s how it works step by step:
Below is a simplified view of how a typical double-diaphragm pump operates:
Compressed air enters the back of diaphragm A.
Diaphragm A is pushed outward, which pulls diaphragm B inward (they’re mechanically connected).
Diaphragm B draws fluid into its chamber via the inlet check valve.
Compressed air switches to the back of diaphragm B.
Diaphragm B is pushed outward, forcing fluid out of the discharge port.
Diaphragm A resets by pulling in new fluid through its inlet.
This alternating back-and-forth motion continues as long as air pressure is supplied, allowing for continuous fluid transfer with minimal mechanical wear.
Diaphragm pumps are often used where traditional centrifugal pumps or gear pumps just won’t cut it. Here’s why:
Self-priming: They can run dry and lift fluid from below the pump level.
Handles solids and slurries: Ideal for abrasive or viscous fluids.
Leak-free design: No rotating seals. Great for hazardous, corrosive, or sensitive fluids.
Chemical-resistant materials: Available in configurations suitable for acids, solvents, and other aggressive chemicals.
At EV Pump, we’ve spec’d and serviced diaphragm pumps in some of the toughest fluid handling environments out there. If you’re wondering whether it’s the right fit for your system, we’re happy to help you walk through the options.
